Guess my Knowledge

In collaboration with ,

Uncertainty is the state of limited knowledge where it is impossible to exactly describe the existing state or a future outcome. Despite there being no escape from uncertainty, humans keep seeking knowledge about the world to enhance their ability to get to the right conclusions. But, is our feeling of knowing “knowledge” itself? Is what you think you know enough to judge your knowledge and that of others? After all, if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a freaking duck, right?!

The semester project is the biggest exhibition project undertaken during the last year of Media Technology which culminated in a 4 day long exhibition during the Rotterdam Art Night 2019. The theme of the exhibition was Certainty and our project focused on the feeling of being certain about something.

We started off with the following statement: The feeling of knowing is enough, which is a reinterpretation of the Socratic paradox “I know that I know nothing”.

This statement should then be translated into an experience which is why we decided to created a game for two where your perceived knowledge of the other and the other part’s knowledge of you in return was what would give you points. It was meant to put the players in a state where it is not just about who knows most, but the certainty of knowledge itself.

Statement to Experience - Certainty

CERTAINTY was the overall theme for this the 2019 exhibition project. The participating students work in groups, each with their own process. The exhibition project has three phases. First, students are asked to search for scientific insights that relate to the theme certainty. After sufficient exploration they are asked to formulate compelling statements related to their findings. Once this stage is completed they translate their statements into works that convey their statements as experiences.
